If you’re not obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy, it’s because you haven’t seen it. It has all the elements of an amazing show: strong characters and great actors to portray them, an excellent storyline, and crazy plot twists. I’ve shed some serious tears over this show – I’d tell you why, but I’m no spoiler. So if you’re out looking for a slew of new, already aired episodes to watch in order to scratch that medical drama itch, here are six shows to watch if you love Grey’s Anatomy.
1. Private Practice 2007-2013
What it’s About
Private Practice follows the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery after her departure from Grey’s Anatomy to move to sunny L.A. and join a private medical practice. Why You’ll Love It What could be better than Grey’s Anatomy, than essentially, more Grey’s Anatomy? This show is filled with the same kind of romance and intriguing medical cases that make Grey’s so captivating. The series also examines a number of moral dilemmas, which cause you to consider them and how you would behave in a similar situation. Where to Watch Currently available on Netflix and Hulu. 2. The Good Doctor 2017 -
What it’s About
The Good Doctor is about Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgical resident both on the autism spectrum and with savant syndrome. It follows how he is perceived by others, the strides he makes in his career, and the development of his personal life. Why You’ll Love It This show is brilliant. Not only does Freddie Highmore do an excellent job in his portrayal of an autistic savant doctor, but also the show’s concept is enlightening while being entertaining. If you love all of the unique medical cases in Grey’s, you’ll love this show. And, while there is some romance in The Good Doctor, it isn’t nearly as central to the storyline as it is in Grey’s, which is actually quite refreshing. Where to Watch Available now on Hulu. 3. The Night Shift 2014-2017
What it’s About
Set in San Antonio, Texas, The Night Shift follows the staff of the night shift at San Antonio Memorial as they encounter disasters in both their personal and professional lives. Why You’ll Love It The Night Shift follows a number of ex-military doctors, which brings something a bit different to the medical drama table. For one thing, it’s definitely fast-paced. Think Grey’s season finales, string situations like that together all in a row, and you’ve got a season of The Night Shift. If it sounds a little intense, that’s because it is. Only four seasons long, this one really packs a punch that we couldn’t get enough of. Where to Watch The first three seasons are now available on Netflix. 4. Call the Midwife 2012 -
What it’s About
Set in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s impoverished East London, Call the Midwife follows a group of young, working midwives. Why You’ll Love It I love a good period drama – especially one with a medical twist. Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, this show’s storyline is fresh and profound without trying too hard. If you’re a fan of Grey’s monologues at the beginning and end of the show, you’ll love Call the Midwife. Where to Watch It Now available on Netflix and Hulu. 5. Station 19 2018- What it’s About Station 19 focuses on the men and women who serve as firefighters in – you guessed it – station 19. Why You’ll Love It Very recently released, Station 19 is the second spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy after Dr. Ben Warren made a career change from a surgeon to a firefighter and EMT. A show with all the personal drama we’ve come to love Grey’s for, it has a bit of a different take on the medical side of things that I’ve really come to enjoy. Where to Watch New episodes release weekly on Hulu. With Ellen Pompeo signing a two-year contract extension, it’s safe to say Grey’s isn’t going anywhere for a while – but as you’re not-so-patiently waiting for those episodes to roll out, we’ve got you covered.
